Origin and history

The house Guiton, located in Varzy in the Nièvre department (region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), dates from the 1st quarter of the sixteenth century. This civilian building, typical of Renaissance residential architecture, is distinguished by its preserved elements, including a cellar and a floor with beams and flooring of the period, protected from 1925. Its façades and roofs, registered in 1948, testify to its local heritage importance.

The location of the house, at 2 or 4 rue des Lods, remains approximate according to the sources, with a cartographic accuracy deemed mediocre (level 5/10). This type of bourgeois or artisanal house reflects Varzy's urban development at a time when the region, then in Burgundy, has a relative prosperity linked to trade and agriculture. The monuments of that time often served as a place of life, storage (caves for food or wine), and sometimes a workshop for artisans.

The successive protections (1925 for interior elements, 1948 for exteriors) underline the historical value of this building, although its current use (visit, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources. The Creative Commons license associated with a photo by Eric Walter indicates a contemporary documentary interest in this unknown heritage.
