Origin and history

The house at 15 Berthe Molly Street (formerly Jewish Street) in Colmar is an emblematic building of Alsatian architectural heritage. Built in the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, it illustrates the Renaissance style by its richly carved portal, dated 1566, and its octagonal stone staircase turret. These elements, remarkably preserved, bear witness to the local craftsmanship and artistic influences of the time.

The gate, flanked by pilasters and decorated with Renaissance motifs, opens on a staircase in screws whose cage is illuminated by diamond windows. The turret, surmounted by a pointed roof, is a typical example of colmarian civil architecture in the late 16th century. These parts of the building were listed as historic monuments on June 18, 1929, highlighting their heritage value.

Although partially transformed at a later stage, the building retains traces of its original use, probably linked to bourgeois housing or the commercial activities of Colmar, a prosperous city in the Renaissance. The street of the Jews, now renamed Berthe Molly Street, also recalls the medieval and reborn past of this neighborhood, marked by an active Jewish community before the seventeenth century.
