Origin and history

The house at 19 rue du Rempart in Ensisheim (High Rhine) is an iconic Renaissance building dating from the second half of the 16th century. It is distinguished by its architectural elements like the ionic columns and a pediment, typical of this period. His inscription as a historic monument in 1935 specifically focused on the stair turret and its entrance gate, highlighting their heritage value.

According to an oral tradition, this house would have welcomed Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Viscount of Turenne and Marshal of Louis XIV, during his visit to Ensisheim in 1674, as part of his military campaigns. This visit coincided with the period before his death in combat in 1675. The house also retains traces of a painted ceiling on the ground floor, now masked, and has undergone modifications such as the removal of the polygonal arrow from its turret.

The structure combines a variety of materials, with a second level in wood strip after the initial construction. Its historic address (formerly 25, rue du Rempart) and its Insee code (68082) are located precisely in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as poor (level 5/10), and sources such as Wikipedia and Monumentum document its history.
