Origin and history

The house at 4, Kilian Street in Riquewihr is a building from the early seventeenth century, built in sandstone with wood-paned elements. It is distinguished by its monumental entrance door dated 1618, a circular staircase turret of 1616, and partially preserved sill windows. The building, which has been listed as historical monuments since 1930, reflects the Alsatian architecture of the time, with details such as a painted ceiling and interior doors.

Originally, this property, called Schoppenhof then Kegelannhof, belonged to Conrad de Kaysersberg before being acquired in 1444 by Count Louis de Württemberg. In the 17th century, Andreas Staedelin became the owner and undertook major works: reconstruction of the house in 1618 and addition of the stair turret in 1616. The house then passed into the hands of local notables, such as stettmeistre Jean Henri Moog in 1645 and mayor Kaercher until 1830. Subsequent changes, notably in 1870, partially altered its structure.

The site consists of several buildings of various periods, including a cart door dated 1540, suggesting an earlier occupation. The property, originally unified until the 19th century, was divided around 1870. The protected elements include the facades, the stair turret and the entrance hall, which bear witness to its rich history and architectural evolution.

The house also illustrates the social transformations of Riquewihr, Alsatian wine village. Its current name, Kilian Street, derives from a deformation of the term Kegelannhof. The details such as the recessed well, the wooden coffers and the stone inscriptions (1618, 1664) underline its heritage importance and its anchoring in local history.

Today, the house remains a remarkable example of the Alsatian bourgeois habitation of the seventeenth century, mixing residential, agricultural (stable, harvest) and symbolic functions. Its registration in 1930 and its partial preservation offer an overview of the constructive techniques and lifestyle of the time.
