Origin and history

The house at 2, rue du Marché in Rouffach (High Rhine) is a historic monument classified since 1921. Built in the 1st quarter of the 17th century, it is distinguished by its typical architecture of the period, including a 1616 gate, decorated with sculptures and ironwork motifs. This door, originally located in the courtyard of a nearby house (7, rue du Marché), was integrated into the building during work carried out around 1909 by colmarian architect Christian Schoffit, after the destruction of a adjoining house.

The north elevation of the house features a corner chain and a window in the middle of a monolithic hanger, while the sprocket wall has a bay in the middle of the hanger and a carved door with a chambranle. The latter is decorated with shell niches, wooded heads, and a pediment with volutes, reflecting the local crafts of the period. Subsequent alterations, such as the 18th-century windows or the reconstruction of the gable wall at the beginning of the 20th century, testify to its architectural evolution throughout the centuries.

The house illustrates the urban history of Rouffach, an Alsatian city marked by its medieval and Renaissance heritage. Its classification as a historical monument underscores its importance in preserving the civilian structure of the Grand East region, while offering a concrete example of the transformations experienced by ancient dwellings over the years. The protected elements, such as the 1616 gate, are valuable remains of art and crafts from the early 17th century.
