Origin and history

The house at 4, rue de la Prévoté in Rouffach (High Rhine) is a typical example of 16th century civil architecture. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1929 protects, among other things, its facade adorned with ground-knit windows and its Renaissance door with canned pilasters, surmounted by an entablishment. These decorative elements, such as composite capitals or d-acanthe leaves, reflect the artistic influence of the period.

Originally, the house had a toothed gable, visible in a 1911 photograph, later replaced by a half-croup roof. The building was joined to another house, now disappeared, which explains the blind gouteau wall. Inside, ionic columns and carved capitals, observed in 1929, suggest a particular attention to decoration, although access to the interior has not been documented since 1996.

The entrance door, probably more recent than the initial structure, replaces an older opening. Its carved chamber and ornamental details make it a remarkable testimony of Renaissance art in Alsace. The house thus illustrates the architectural evolution and local constructive practices between the beginning of the sixteenth century and subsequent modifications, such as the disappearance of the original pinion.
