Origin and history
The house at 12 Church Street in Westhalten (High Rhine) is a civilian building dating from the 4th quarter of the 16th century. It is distinguished by its stone oriel and triangular sandstone box, supported by a recessed column. The ground chambranles windows and the segment arched lintel door carved from a wooded shield testify to its Renaissance style. The roof with long, broken sides and interior elements such as the door of the pane in full hanger complete its historic character.
Since 1934, this house bears traces of several epochs: a stone dated 1593 above a window, a lodge dated 1624, and an arch key of 1630 re-used in a rebuilt wall. The interior passage, transformed in the 20th century, preserves a door dated 1781. These modifications illustrate its architectural evolution throughout the centuries, while preserving remarkable Renaissance elements.
The house reflects the urban history of Westhalten, an Alsatian village marked by Germanic and French influences. His oriel, typical of the bourgeois houses of the region, served both as a decorative element and as an observation post. The presence of a stumped ecu suggests a past linked to a notable family, although its identity remains unknown. Today, this monument bears witness to the civil architectural heritage of the late 16th century in Alsace.
