Origin and history

This house at 16 rue du Bouillon, Puy-en-Velay, is an example of 16th and 17th century civil architecture. Its entrance is distinguished by a fitted hanger door, decorated with nailed panels forming an original and preserved decoration. The vantals, protected by a 1973 decree, illustrate a rare craft know-how for the time.

Inside, the hardwood staircase, Louis XIII style, and the French ceilings testify to the refinement of the bourgeois houses of this period. The stucco fireplace stucco, located on the first floor, adds to the decorative richness of the building. These elements reflect the influence of regional artistic currents and the evolution of construction techniques between Renaissance and classical times.

The location of the house, in the historic centre of Puy-en-Velay, suggests its integration into an urban fabric marked by trade and crafts. Although the archives do not mention its original owners, its architecture and its intact decorations make it a heritage representative of the easy habitat in the Haute-Loire during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
