Ceiling with painted beams and soles (Box BC 22): inscription by order of 29 August 2000

Origin and history

This house in Langres, in the Great East, dates from the first half of the seventeenth century. It is distinguished by a ceiling painted on the ground floor, integrated into a structure partially dating from the sixteenth century. This ceiling is composed of two decorated beams, one of which has a landscape medallion surrounded by interlaces, as well as 18 solitaires decorated over three spans. These elements illustrate the period's decorative home art, combining geometric motifs and naturalistic representations.

The ceiling with painted beams and flooring was classified as Historic Monument by order of 29 August 2000, highlighting its heritage value. The house is located in 43 Place de Verdun, in the department of Haute-Marne (52), in the Grand Est region. Although the address is precise, the GPS location is considered to be of poor quality (note 5/10), which may complicate an accurate identification of the building without a site visit.

The building is part of the architectural context of Langres, a fortified town whose heritage reflects both medieval and classical influences. The painted ceilings of this period, often sponsored by local bourgeois or notables, bear witness to artisanal know-how and a taste for interior ornamentation. Their preservation allows us to study decorative techniques and iconographic themes in vogue in the seventeenth century in this region.

No information is available on opening to the public, possible room rental or services such as guest rooms. Sources are limited to Monumentum data and internal archives, without mention of specific owners, artists or sponsors. The focus is on the protection of the ceiling, which is central to the historic value of the site.
