Marcel Texier - Chief Architect of Historic Monuments Leads reconstruction in the same way.

Origin and history

This house, located in Gray in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was built at the end of the sixteenth century. It was a typical example of the civil architecture of that time, before being seriously damaged during a bombing in 1940. Only the ground floor and a section of the first floor wall survived this destruction.

Originally listed as a historical monument, the house was rebuilt after the war under the direction of Marcel Texier, chief architect of the Historical Monuments. The reconstruction scrupulously respected the original façade, allowing its final classification on December 22, 1941. The protected elements now include facades and roofs in their old layouts.

This monument illustrates both the ravages of the Second World War on French heritage and the restoration efforts undertaken to preserve the architectural heritage. Its history also reflects the importance attached to the conservation of emblematic civilian buildings, even in times of crisis.
