Origin and history
The House Henri IV, located in Mortagne-au-Perche, is an emblematic construction of the late 16th century. This Renaissance-style building is distinguished by its five-level square staircase tower, decorated with carved strips imitating the Greek triglyphs and vegetal motifs. The facades and roofs, as well as the fireplaces and a door carved in the tower, have been protected since 1979.
According to historical sources, this house welcomed King Henry IV during his visit to Mortagne-au-Perche in 1599. The windows, once equipped with shingles, have lost these elements over time. The building illustrates the civil architecture of the Renaissance in Normandy, with classical influences visible in its decorations.
The location of the house at 2bis rue Toussaint is specified in the Merimée base, although GPS coordinates suggest a slightly different address (7 rue de Toussaint). The monument, a private property, is not open to the visit, but its exterior remains a notable architectural testimony of the region.
