Origin and history

This house in Agde, built in the 17th century, belonged to the cathedral chapter of the city. It served as a residence for the main ecclesiastical benefits. The oldest part is limited to six meters of north-west facade, while the courtyard retains its period pavement. The staircase tower, located at the eastern corner of the courtyard, has an original structure: it forms a quarter of a circle protruding on the courtyard, with rectangular inner walls.

The turret houses a full core screw staircase, rising on four floors above the ground floor. The entire construction, including the frame of the entrance door of the turret, is made of black basaltic lava. Despite the hardness of this material, the frame was decorated with elaborate sculptures, showing remarkable craftsmanship. These elements, as well as the floor of the court, were protected by an inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1965.

The precise address of this monument is the 5 rue Michelet in Agde, in the department of the Hérault (34). The corresponding GPS location is considered to be fair accuracy (note 5/10). Only the entrance, the court floor and the stair turret are officially protected, according to the registration decree of 10 March 1965.
