Old parts of the facade to the south of the courtyard, including the staircase with screws in the turret (Box F 1480): inscription by order of 23 February 1965

Origin and history

The house located in Béziers, dated from the 15th century, presents an architecture marked by a elevation between the streets of Doctors-Bourguet and the ramp of Canterelles. This particularity led to the creation of a terrace on the ground floor, on Rue des Doctors-Bourguet. The building underwent major alterations in the 18th century, notably at the entrance gate, resulting in earthworks that enhanced the floor of the courtyard. This work partially buried the base of the stair turret, located on the edge of this courtyard.

The flamboyant Gothic remains, still visible at the back of the courtyard, include a staircase turret whose ancient courtyard door is framed by bundles of columns forming pinnacles. This door is surmounted by a gable decorated with carved crawlers representing monstrous animals, such as a winged lion, a chimera and a basil. These decorative elements, typical of the flamboyant style, bear witness to the artistic importance of the building in the medieval era.

The house has been partially classified as a Historical Monument since 1965, with protection covering the old parts of the south front of the courtyard, including the staircase with screws in the turret. Today, the building belongs to an association, but its access to the public (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources. Its exact address, 16 rue des Docteurs-Bourguet, confirms its anchoring in the historic center of Béziers, in the department of l'Hérault.
