Origin and history

The house of Richelieu is part of an ambitious urban project initiated by Cardinal de Richelieu, who wanted to transform his native village into a model city. The plans were designed by architect Jacques Lemercier, known for his work on the Château de Richelieu. The city adopted a rigorous geometric line, with ditches, a fortified enclosure, monumental gates and symmetrical streets lined with aligned houses.

This house, located in Place du Marché, is one of the buildings built according to this innovative urban plan for the time. Its architecture reflects the harmony sought by the cardinal, combining functionality and classical aesthetics. The facade and roof were protected by a registration order in 1932, highlighting their heritage value.

The Richelieu project illustrates the will of the great lords of the seventeenth century to mark their power through the development of entire territories. The city thus became a symbol of emerging absolutism, where the architectural order reflected the social and political order desired by its founder. Today, this house bears witness to this unique urban history in France.
