Origin and history

This house, located at 23 rue du Commerce in Lons-le-Saunier, is an example of civil architecture from the 4th quarter of the 16th and 1st quarter of the 17th centuries. It was classified as Historic Monument by order of 2 December 1926, with a correction made on 24 October 1929. The protection specifically concerns its facade, including the vantals of the door, remarkable elements of this period.

Lons-le-Saunier, capital of the Jura department, was at that time a developing city, marked by commercial and craft activities. The houses of this period often reflect the local economic boom, with carefully designed facades and architectural details. This type of building bears witness to the way of life of the bourgeois or merchants of the period, playing a central role in urban life.

Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée database indicate that the location of this monument is considered fair (note 5/10). No additional information is provided on its current use, such as a possible public opening, room rental or guest rooms.
