Façade: registration by order of 2 December 1926
Origin and history
This house, located on 30 rue du Commerce in Lons-le-Saunier, is a building whose origins could go back to the 16th century, although only remains of this era remain. It was rebuilt in the 4th quarter of the 17th century and in the 18th century, when it acquired its present appearance. The facade, a notable architectural element, was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 2 December 1926.
Lons-le-Saunier, a town in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was at that time a developing urban centre, marked by a civil architecture reflecting the evolution of construction styles and techniques. The bourgeois houses, like this one, bear witness to the local prosperity and artistic influences of the Old Regime. Their preservation now allows us to understand the way of life and aspirations of the provincial elites of the time.
The location of this house, in a shopping street, suggests a link to the economic activities of the city. The facades of the houses of this period were often designed to reflect the social status of their owners, while integrating practical elements related to urban life. The inscription of the façade as a historic monument underscores its heritage and architectural interest.
