Origin and history
The Maison la Communale, located in Fontaines-en-Sologne in the Loir-et-Cher, is an emblematic example of the traditional civil architecture of the Sologne. Dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, it illustrates the style of wood-paned houses, with a brick fill laid in chevrons and torchis, resting on a coated masonry base. This type of construction, common in the region, reflects local techniques and materials available at that time.
Property of the municipality, as its name indicates, the house is always used as a dwelling. Its street façade, characteristic of the old solognote houses, was protected by an inscription under the Historical Monuments on 22 August 1949. This ranking highlights its heritage importance, although its use remains primarily residential.
The location of the House of the Communal, on the road to Bauzy, and its modest but representative architecture, make it a valuable testimony of the daily life in Sologne in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Such houses often served as housing for local families, while sometimes playing a role in community life, as evidenced by their belonging to the municipality.
The available data, notably from the Merimée database and Monumentum, highlight its historical and architectural interest. However, little detailed information is provided on its specific history, past occupants or any changes it has undergone over the centuries. Its present state and continued use make it a living heritage, anchored in the local landscape.
