Origin and history

The house called La Fortresse is a 15th and 16th century building located in Vuillafans, Doubs department, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It has been protected as a historical monument since 1977, especially for its facades, roofs and staircase with internal screws, characteristic elements of its late medieval architecture.

Some elements of the house, such as the facade bays and the walled staircase, bear witness to its medieval origin, while changes in the 18th century have changed some parts, including a bay on the ground floor and the commons. These transformations illustrate the architectural and functional evolution of the building throughout the centuries.

The inscription in historical monuments, by order of 6 October 1977, specifically covers facades, roofs and stairways, highlighting their heritage value. The house is located on Rue du Teméraire, a central location in the village of Vuillafans, strengthening its anchor in the local historical fabric.

Although the sources do not explicitly mention its initial use, this type of fortified dwelling was often associated with wealthy families or administrative functions in medieval towns. The commons, added in the eighteenth century, suggest an adaptation to the domestic or agricultural needs of the time.

The House La Fortresse is representative of the bourgeois or seigneurial houses of the region, combining residual defensive elements (as its name suggests) and comfort facilities. Its state of conservation and protection make it a valuable witness to the architectural history of Franche-Comté.
