17th century gate, including vantals: inscription by decree of 11 April 1946

Origin and history

The house located rue Soubeyran in Mende, Lozère, dates from the 17th century and is known for its characteristic architecture. Its limestone door, typical of the region, is framed with pilasters and surmounted by an interrupted triangular pediment, adorned with an oval oculus. The vantals, richly decorated with worked panels, bear witness to a meticulous craftsmanship. This architectural detail led to its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 11 April 1946, specifically protecting the door and its vantaux.

The door, a central element of this house, illustrates the influence of classical styles in the area in the seventeenth century. Mende limestone, a local material, has been precisely cut to create a harmonious composition, mixing robustness and elegance. The architrave, composed of variously cut stones, and the triangular pediment, although partially interrupted, reinforce the monumental character of the entrance. These features make it a remarkable example of the civil architecture of the period in Languedoc-Roussillon (now Occitanie).

The location of the house, rue Soubeyran, in the centre of Mende, suggests its integration into a historic urban fabric. Although information on its original use or occupants is missing, its classification indicates a recognized heritage value. The accuracy of its location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10), possibly reflecting uncertainties about its exact location or subsequent urban changes. No information is available on its current access to the public or on any re-use (visits, rentals, etc.).
