Origin and history
This 16th-century house, located at the corner of Place du Pilori and Rue Lenepveu in Angers, stands out for its two-part structure. The main elevation on the square consists of two square floors and one attic, while the lateral elevation on Lenepveu Street has three. Both are made of wood, with a slate feel from the third level for the latter. The adjoining walls, in shale and tuft, reveal successive covers. The roof, on the street, is crowned by a rump connecting the appentis of the two buildings.
The construction would date from the second half of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century, on a remembered plot whose secondary elevation, Lenepveu Street, retains traces. The main elevation is facing the Pilori Square, the historic heart of Angers. Partial repairs, including the right posterior and lateral walls, probably took place in the 18th century during the reconstruction of nearby houses. The staircase in screws, wooden and located at the junction of the two parts, saw its first flight redone on an indefinite date.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 1 December 1964 for its facades and roofs, this house illustrates the Angelian civil architecture of the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its current state mixes original and subsequent changes, reflecting the urban evolutions of Angers. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be poor (level 5/10), and its official address intersected by the Merimée bases and GPS coordinates place du Pilori.
