Origin and history

The house located at 25 rue Toussaint in Angers is a composite building, built mainly in schist and tuffeau, with a body of house on street and a posterior extension in square. Its front façade, decorated with two carved spans, bears a Latin inscription dated 1588: "The house will be built by intelligence and fortified by wisdom". The masonries of the posterior wall could go back to the twelfth century, suggesting an earlier occupation of the site.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the house underwent major changes: partial reconstruction of the second house, addition of a third body closing the courtyard, and installation of interior woodwork (including a niche of stove still visible). The window door of the main body, with its segmental arch, and the door on the street, retreated behind you, date from this period. The modifications continued in the 19th century with the reconstruction of the suspended wooden and cast iron staircase, the addition of a large balcony on the facade, and the resumption of the rear elevation of the third body.

Classified as a Historic Monument in 1965, the house was restored in the 1990s to preserve its sculpted, very altered decor. The guardrails on the second floor, added in the 19th century, were then removed. The building illustrates the architectural evolution of Angelina, combining Renaissance elements, classics and later modifications.

The exact address, 25 Toussaint Street, corresponds to a historical area of Angers, although the accuracy of the location is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10). The house is not explicitly open to the public, but its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments makes it a remarkable heritage testimony.
