Origin and history

Maynard House is a medieval house located in Lagrasse, in the Aude department, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the 14th century, it is distinguished by its typical architecture of cutlery, with a hard stone post divided into three parts. The capital of this pole is adorned with two capped heads, while a moulded wooden base supports a master beam. The ends of this beam rest on wooden crows, and ground sols, once bearing a corbellation, remain.

Initially, the front of the house was to have a piece of wood, but it was modified to accommodate a balcony. The architectural ensemble, particularly the portico with its mouldings and its central shield, is characteristic of the fourteenth century. The Maynard House has been one of the historic monuments listed since 1931, protecting key elements such as the stone pile, the base, the crows and the covered solives. These details reflect the importance of civil structures in the medieval planning of Lagrasse.

The location of the house on the Market Square suggests its role in the commercial and social life of the city in the Middle Ages. The cutlery, typical of merchant towns, provided shelter for stalls and passers-by. Today, the Maynard House bears witness to this period thanks to its preserved architectural elements, although its accuracy of location is considered mediocre (level 6/10).
