Façades, roofs and vaulted rooms on the ground floor (case AB 90): inscription by order of 26 October 1995
Origin and history
The medieval house of Figeac, located at 31 rue Caviale, is a monument whose facade dates back to the thirteenth century. This building, classified as Historical Monument, illustrates the medieval civil architecture of the region, with characteristic elements of this period, especially on its vaulted ground floor. The floors, on the other hand, were radically redesigned in the 18th century, reflecting the architectural changes and changing needs of the occupants over the centuries.
The building was partially protected by an order of 26 October 1995, which specifically concerns the facades, roofs and vaulted rooms on the ground floor. This protection reflects the heritage importance of the building, both for its medieval state and for its later transformations. The location of the house in the centre of Figeac, a city marked by a rich historical past, reinforces its interest in the urban landscape.
The medieval house is part of a wider context where Figeac, located in the present Lot department, was a commercial and cultural crossroads in the Middle Ages. The houses of that time often served as both a dwelling, a place of commerce and storage, reflecting the daily life and economic activities of the population. Their preservation makes it possible today to better understand the social and urban organization of this period.
