Staircase on courtyard, with ramps and guardrails of galleries; the two panelled rooms of the first floor of the house on street and on courtyard (cad. AD 181): entry by order of 5 February 1999
Origin and history
This house located in Bar-le-Duc, in the Great East, is a typical example of 18th and 19th century civil architecture. The neighborhood, built in the first half of the eighteenth century, has retained most of its original facades, although the ground floor has been transformed into commercial fronts. The building is distinguished by a narrow inner courtyard with a straight and divergent staircase, serving two galleries leading to the first floor.
The most remarkable elements of this house are its interior panels. Two rooms on the first floor conserve woodwork: one dating from the 18th century, the other probably from the first quarter of the 19th century, although in 18th-style. The galleries and their guardrails seem to date back to the mid-19th century. These architectural features led to partial protection of the monument, with an inscription by decree of 5 February 1999, covering the stairwells, ramps, guardrails and walled rooms.
The official address of this monument, according to the Merimée base, is the 15 rue André-Maginot, although an approximate GPS location points to Jeanne d'Arc street. The accuracy of this location is considered fair (note 5/10), which may complicate its exact identification. This building illustrates the evolution of urban dwellings between the 18th and 19th centuries, combining conservation of ancient elements and subsequent adaptations.
