Origin and history

Montpribat House, listed as a Historic Monument, is located in Sauveterre-de-Béarn in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Built in the first half of the seventeenth century, it is built on the old wall of the city. Its architecture combines flat stones and rolled stones, characteristic of the local buildings of the period. It preserves remarkable elements such as chimney stumps, gables, covered old mâchicoulis consoles, as well as sled windows and neat moldings on frames.

The house adopts a barlong plan and extends through a gallery that once led to a dovecote, now gone. The facades and roofs, protected by a registration order in 1981, illustrate the adaptation of a domestic construction to a medieval urban context. Its location on the enclosure suggests a high social status of its first occupants, although their identities are not mentioned in available sources.

The building reflects the construction techniques and residential needs of the nobility or the local bourgeoisie in the 17th century. The lack of accurate data on its owners or its exact function limits its understanding of its historical role, but its architecture and location make it a rare testimony of this period in the region.
