Origin and history

The Morang House, also known as the Indian Ocean Music and Instrument Museum, is a French museum located in Hell-Bourg, an island in the municipality of Salazie, on the island of La Réunion. This museum was inaugurated on 5 November 2015 in the former home of Henri Morange. It houses an exceptional collection of 1,500 traditional instruments, over 400 of which are exhibited. This collection, one of the three richest in France, was brought together by two enthusiasts, Robert Fonlupt and François Ménard, in half a century of research worldwide.

The building itself, as well as its garden, staircase and longhouse, was added to the additional inventory of the Historic Monuments on June 7, 2018. The Morang House is located at 4 rue de la Cayenne in Hell-Bourg, and belongs to the municipality of Salazie. This museum offers a unique overview of the Indian Ocean's musical traditions, while preserving a valuable architectural and cultural heritage.

The Morange House, with its history and collection, represents a place of memory and discovery for visitors. It illustrates the importance of cultural exchanges in the region and the richness of local musical traditions. The museum is also a testament to the commitment of enthusiasts to the preservation and enhancement of intangible heritage.
