Origin and history
Mougeot House is an iconic building located in the town of Saint-Dizier, Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region. Built during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, it represents an architectural testimony of this period, with its wings in return that give it a distinctive structure. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments, by order of 12 May 1989, underlines its heritage importance, although this protection does not concern the construction extending the south wing.
In the 18th century, Saint-Dizier, like many cities in the Champagne-Ardenne region, was marked by a partly rural and artisanal economy. Bourgeois houses, such as Mougeot House, often reflected the prosperity of their owners, linked to local commercial or administrative activities. These buildings served not only as a residence, but also as a symbol of social status in a society still very hierarchical.
The registration of Mougeot House in 1989 is part of a broader approach to preserving the French architectural heritage. This type of monument, characteristic of the town planning of the provinces under the Old Regime, offers an overview of the lifestyles and aesthetic tastes of the period. Today, he takes part in the development of local and regional heritage, drawing attention to the history of Saint-Dizier and the Haute-Marne.
