Origin and history
The house at 28 National Street in Dunkirk is an 18th-century building, built of brick and stone. Its remarkable elements include the frame of the cochère door, the solin, the pediment and the capitals, all of stone. The main body, covered with a long-paned roof with exposed gables, is completed by a lateral wing in appentis, adorned with a cornice in brick relief. This building reflects the local constructive techniques of the time.
The hotel was built for a certain P. Degravier, with a building permission granted in 1783. The pediment and leather sculptures of the cochère door probably date from the mid-19th century, adding a later decorative touch. After 1987, the interior was redesigned to accommodate offices and the Jean Bart cinema, resulting in the disappearance of the original staircase.
Classified as a Historical Monument, the façade and roof of this house were registered by decree of 13 October 1987. Today, the building belongs to a private company and retains a significant heritage value, despite its internal transformations. Its location, although specified as "passable" (level 5/10), remains a point of interest in downtown Dunkirk.
