Origin and history

The house of Crépy-en-Valois, built in the 16th century, is distinguished by its square plan around a small courtyard. The body of stone houses is closed by a cochère door decorated with pilasters and ionic capitals, surmounted by the monograms of Diane de Poitiers (1455-1566) and Marguerite de Valois (1553-1615). The building includes a vaulted cellar, a ground floor, a square floor and a lofty floor with mansards. The bays, often equipped with harps, and a carved door at the corner of the wings reinforce its Renaissance character.

The hotel was partly built by Pierre de La Granche, architect and king's attorney at the bailliage. The royal monograms allow it to date its construction between 1455 and 1615. A second phase of work, attested by the date of 1649 engraved on a skylight and the mansards, took place in the seventeenth century. The building was enlarged and acquired in 1845 by the nuns of Saint-Joseph de Cluny, who founded a boarding school for young girls there until 1856, leaving the building its current name of Saint-Joseph.

The exterior gate, including its vantals, has been protected since 1933 by an inscription in the Historical Monuments. The exact address, 13 rue du Four and 13 rue Alphonse-Cardin, is located in the centre of Crépy-en-Valois, in the department of Oise. Its architecture combines Renaissance and classical influences, reflecting stylistic evolutions between the 16th and 17th centuries.
