The master house; facades and roofs of outbuildings: old common oven, sheepfold, cartettery, barn (cad. D 127, 128, 130-132): inscription by order of 22 July 1994

Origin and history

A typical example of a farm with an open courtyard, typical of the rural architecture of the Landes, is the Nogaro district of Azur (Landes). This type of farm was at the heart of the traditional agro-pastoral economy, where farming and livestock activities combined to support local families. The layout of the buildings – master house, oven, fenil, carretery and sheepfold – reflects a spatial organization designed to optimize daily work and exchanges between members of the community.

The site has undergone changes over time, including the disappearance of a hangar east of the house and two small buildings, as well as the destruction of the sheepfold during a fire in July 2011. In spite of these losses, the imperial has retained protected elements since 1994, such as the master house and the facades of the outbuildings (common oven, barn, cartettery), bearing witness to its heritage importance. These vestiges provide an overview of 19th and 20th century agricultural and social practices in the Landes, where airials played a central role in rural life.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 22 July 1994, the Nogaro Imperial now belongs to a private company. Its listing in the inventory of protected monuments highlights its historical and architectural value, while raising the question of its preservation and accessibility for future generations. The approximate location of the site, noted as "passable" in the databases, invites a more precise exploration of this rural heritage, still unknown despite its role in local history.
