Façade: inscription by order of 19 November 1946

Origin and history

The house at 6 rue des Jongleurs in Arras is a civil building built during the 4th quarter of the 17th century. It is a typical example of the domestic architecture of this period, marked by facades often adorned and structured according to the emerging classic cannons. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by decree of 19 November 1946 underlines its heritage value, especially for its facade, a protected element.

Arras, the town of Pas-de-Calais, was at that time a dynamic urban centre in the province of Artois, then under Spanish and then French influence after the treaties of Westphalia (1648) and the Pyrenees (1659). Bourgeois houses like this reflected the growing prosperity of local elites, often linked to the bed linen trade, a major economic activity of the region. These homes served as both a place of residence and a social showcase, affirming the status of their owners.

The protection of the façade in 1946 was part of a post-Second World War desire to preserve the French architectural heritage, while many cities, including Arras, had suffered significant damage. This measure aimed to preserve the tangible traces of urban history, while allowing for a reconstruction respectful of the old built environment.
