Origin and history
The Maison Pauton is a historic monument located in the city of Mirepoix, in Ariège (Occitanie). It belongs to an iconic architectural ensemble known as Les Couverts, characterized by covered galleries typical of medieval cities in southern France. These structures served both as places of commerce, of protection against weather and of sociability for the inhabitants.
The covered gallery of the Pauton House was officially listed as a Historic Monument by an order dated 25 June 1929. This recognition highlights its heritage importance, linked to medieval urbanism and Mirepoix's economic history. Although the available sources do not specify its exact original use, this type of construction reflects the social and commercial organization of the southern cities in the Middle Ages, where the ground floor was often dedicated to shops and shops.
