Origin and history

The Maison Poignet, located in Collonges-la-Rouge in the department of Corrèze (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a historical monument whose most remarkable element is its 17th century window. Originally, this opening was a girdle bay and crosses from the 15th century. During work in the 17th century, the heel and cross-section were demolished to give way to the present carpentry, a rare example of old carpentry in the region.

The window of the Maison Poignet was classified as Historic Monument by order of 22 April 1954. This classification highlights the scarcity of its carpentry, which reflects the techniques of construction and development of bourgeois or notable dwellings of the time. Few comparable examples remain in the area, which gives this monument special heritage importance.

Collonges-la-Rouge, a medieval village known for its red sandstone constructions, was in modern times a place of passage and exchange. Houses such as the Poignets often reflected the social status of their owners, while integrating architectural elements inherited from previous centuries. The transformation of the bay into a window in the 17th century illustrates the evolution of tastes and needs for opening and light in the rural or semi-urban habitat of the era.
