Origin and history
The Pont de Lajous house, located in Rieux-Volvestre, is an example of medieval civil architecture. Built in the 15th century, it illustrates the construction techniques of the era, with a wooden facade and a brick filling. This type of construction was common in fortified cities, where bourgeois houses and popular houses were coexisted, often in torchi or in wooden strips.
In the Middle Ages, Rieux-Volvestre was a fortified city with a varied population, from bourgeois to artisans. Houses like this reflected the social hierarchy, with more durable materials for the affluent classes. The protection of facades and blankets by decree in 1950 underlines its heritage importance.
The Pont de Lajous house is distinguished by its location near the Lajous Bridge, in a historic area of the city. Its architecture, typical of the 15th and 16th centuries, bears witness to local expertise in construction. Today, it remains a remarkable vestige of medieval urban planning in Occitanie.
