Origin and history

The prefabricated house BCC F 8x8, known as chalet Jeanneret-Prouvé, is a historical monument located in Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Designed in 1940-1941 and built in 1943, it is part of a subdivision and embodies an innovative constructive system developed for the Air Force. Its architecture is based on an interior portal structure in the shape of a compass, signed by its designers, Jean Prouvé and Pierre Jeanneret.

The house was classified as a historic monument by order of 31 May 2024, thus protecting the entire building, including its masonry base. This ranking underlines its heritage importance, linked to the history of prefabrication and the collaboration between two major figures of modern architecture. It is located at 9 rue de la Colline, on cadastral plot no.303, AM section.

This project is part of a reconstruction and technical innovation, marked by the need for speed and efficiency after the destruction of the Second World War. The house testifies to the adaptation of industrial methods to the domain of habitat, a revolutionary approach for the time. Its state of conservation and location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 7/10), make it a rare and valuable example of this architectural heritage.

Available photographs, such as those of Chabe01 under Creative Commons license, as well as data from the Merimée database, document its current aspect. Although its current use (visit, rental, guest rooms) is not specified in the sources, its status as a historical monument guarantees its preservation for future generations.

Jean Prouvé, engineer and designer, and Pierre Jeanneret, architect and cousin of Le Corbusier, have marked the history of architecture through their collaborations. Their work on this project reflects their common search for functionality, modularity and industrial aesthetics, principles that have long-lastingly influenced the modern movement.

The BCC F 8x8 prefabricated house thus embodies a pivotal period in French architectural history, where the urgency of reconstruction has stimulated bold solutions, combining technical rigor and creativity. Its recent ranking confirms the recognition of its heritage value, both historically and technically.
