Fortified door and stair turret: inscription by decree of 15 June 1927
Origin and history
La Maison prévotale de Lesges is an emblematic building located in the commune of Lesges, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it embodies medieval and reborn civil architecture of historical Picardie. This building is particularly remarkable for its defensive elements, such as its fortified gate and stair turret, characteristic of the pre-votal houses of the time, which often served as a local administrative and judicial seat.
The Provotional House was registered as a historical monument by order of 15 June 1927, thereby recognizing its heritage value. This protection specifically concerns the fortified door and the stair turret, architectural elements that bear witness to its past importance. Located on 3 Rue du Château, it is part of an urban landscape marked by the medieval and modern history of the region. Its inclusion in the Merimée base, under the code Insee 02421, confirms its anchoring in the local and national heritage.
Prevotal houses, like Lesges, played a central role in the social and administrative organization of small towns and villages in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. They served as a place of residence for the Provost, representing the seigneurial or royal power, while providing for judicial and fiscal functions. In the context of the Hauts-de-France, a region marked by a high density of historical monuments, these buildings illustrate the structure of the territory and the control exercised by local authorities over rural and urban populations.
