Origin and history
The house at 21 rue du Port in Clermont-Ferrand is a former mansion built in two separate countrysides. At the beginning of the 16th century, the street façade and stair turret were built, maintaining a late medieval style typical of the early Renaissance decades. The two entrance doors, 14th century style, suggest an original division into two superimposed adjoining hotels, reflecting the transitional architectural practices of the time.
In the 17th century, the buildings on courtyard were completely rebuilt, incorporating a stairway with loggia, marking the emerging classical influences. The interiors then underwent major reshuffles: decorations redone in the 18th century, then under the Empire, while the vantals of the door on street date back to the 19th century. These transformations illustrate the continuous adaptation of the building to the tastes and needs of its occupants throughout the centuries.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 30 October 1987, the house protects its facades, roofs, and the stairwell with galleries. Its location in the Renaissance district of Clermont-Ferrand, as well as its hybrid elements (medieval and classical), make it a remarkable architectural testimony of the transition between the Middle Ages and the modern era in Auvergne.
