Origin and history
The house at 23 rue du Port in Clermont-Ferrand is a former mansion built in two separate countrysides. At the beginning of the 16th century, the street façade and stair turret were built, incorporating entrance doors to the medieval 14th century style, reflecting the persistence of ancient forms in the early decades of the Renaissance. These doors corresponded to two superimposed adjoining hotels, a rare configuration for the time.
In the 17th century, the buildings on the courtyard were completely rebuilt, including a stairway with loggia, while the interiors underwent subsequent renovations, notably in the 18th century and under the Empire. The vantals of the door on street date back to the 19th century. The south façade, composed of two separate spans, serves the entrances of houses n°21 and 23, the latter being accessible via a stair turret enclaved in front of the inner courtyard.
The monument has been partially protected since 1987, with an inscription in the Inventory of Historic Monuments for its armorial tympanum located in the stair turret. This architectural detail demonstrates the social importance of the original owners, although their identity is not mentioned in the available sources. The building thus illustrates the evolution of urban styles and usages between the Middle Ages and the modern era, in a neighbourhood marked by the Renaissance.
The exact location, although documented (23 rue du Port), has a cartographic accuracy considered poor (note 5/10), possibly reflecting later urban changes. Available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée base) highlight its heritage interest, without specifying its current accessibility to the public or its contemporary uses.
