Origin and history
This house in Riom, in Puy-de-Dôme, is a remarkable example of civil architecture from the Renaissance to the 16th century. It is distinguished by its richly decorated door, typical of this artistic period. The two pilasters surrounding the entrance have a variety of plant decorations and attributes, while their Corinthian capitals incorporate relief figures. Two fine medallions adorn the base of the pilasters, adding to the elegance of the ensemble. The bay, in a basket handle, is surmounted by a forged iron imposte, each of which is unique, showing exceptional craftsmanship.
The facade of this house, as well as its staircase, were protected by a decree of inscription under the Historical Monuments on 25 June 1925. This classification highlights the heritage value of its Renaissance elements, including the door and its sculptures, which illustrate the influence of Italian arts in France at that time. The precise address, 20 rue du Commerce, allows to locate this monument in the historic center of Riom, a city marked by a rich architectural past.
The ornamental details of this house, such as stylized foliage and figurine capitals, reflect the aesthetic cannons of the Renaissance, where antiques mix with innovation. The basket loop of the bay and the unique forged irons of the imposter demonstrate a search for symmetry and harmony, characteristic of bourgeois or aristocratic homes of the time. Although sources do not mention the original owners, the building bears witness to the cultural influence of Riom, then prosperous city of Auvergne.
