Origin and history

This house, classified as a Historical Monument, is considered one of the oldest in Villefranche-de-Conflent. It retained two characteristic windows as well as traces of a crenelage probably dating back to the thirteenth century. These elements, including the visible covers on the façade, suggest a defensive origin or subsequent adaptation to residential needs.

The facade has three distinct levels, with a vertical cut over the windows on the first floor, evoking the location of an old merlon. This architectural detail, combined with the presence of crows and lintels, bears witness to medieval construction techniques. The house, located at 8 rue Saint-Jacques, is now owned by the municipality.

The elements protected by decree of 3 November 1965 specifically include lintel windows on crows, on the front of the street. These features are a remarkable example of 13th-century civil architecture in the Pyrénées-Orientales, reflecting both military and domestic influences of the time.
