Origin and history
The Renaissance House, located at 14 Rue Séguret in Puy-en-Velay, is a historical monument dating back to the 16th century in the form of two separate houses. In the 17th century, the Bonjour house, an outbuilding of the Maillhet hotel, is distinguished by its construction in wooden panels and block, framed with ornamented pilasters. These two houses were probably unified in the 19th century, explaining the architectural differences visible on the present façade.
The façade on Rue Séguret presents a 17th-century bossed door, crowned with a pediment intersected and flanked with pilasters with interlacing and twisting motifs. These elements, combined with a cornice partially masked by coating, suggest separate construction campaigns. Inside, a Louis XIII staircase with turned wooden ramp and second floor woodwork, including a cariatide carved fireplace, illustrate the refinement of the era.
Classified as a Historic Monument since 1949 for its 17th century carpentry door, this house embodies the transition between Renaissance and classical styles. Its entrance hall retains an arching in basket handle, while the differences in alignment of the walls reinforce the hypothesis of a late fusion of the two original buildings. The location in the heart of Puy-en-Velay, a city marked by its medieval and reborn heritage, highlights its importance in local urban history.
