Origin and history

The Ripoll House is part of an iconic architectural ensemble of Mirepoix, known as the Cutlery. These houses with covered galleries, typical of medieval and post-medieval urbanism, form a protected passage for pedestrians and traders. Their wooden and stone structure reflects the region's traditional construction techniques, adapted to the needs of an active shopping town since the Middle Ages.

The covered gallery of the Ripoll house was officially recognized and protected by an inscription under the Historical Monuments on 25 June 1929. This measure aims to preserve a unique architectural heritage, a witness to Mirepoix's urban and commercial history. Although the details of its exact origin or historical owners are lacking, its integration into the old urban fabric underlines its importance in local life.

Located on Place Maréchal Leclerc, the house Ripoll is located in a wider setting of half-timbered houses and arcades, characteristic of the cities of southern France. These assemblies served as both places of commerce, housing and protection against weather. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the social and economic organization of Occitan cities throughout the centuries.
