Origin and history
La Maison romane is a private villa located in Hyères, in the Var department, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. This medieval monument, probably built in the 13th century, is distinguished by its irregular bellows facades and bays in the middle of the village, typical of Provencal Romanesque architecture. Its most remarkable features include twin windows with marble columns, crows in quarter-round, and an interior arc supporting the original ceiling. Despite some later changes, it remains one of the best preserved of the medieval period in Hyères.
The facades of the Romanesque House were inscribed in the Historic Monuments in 1926, recognizing their heritage value. The structure reveals traces of posterior layouts, such as the raised ground floor, but retains original details such as the cushions in the windows and a vaulted cord. Its location at the corner of Paradis Street and the Paradis Crossing, as well as its stone-cut corner link, testify to medieval construction techniques adapted to the Provencal urban context.
Although partially annexed to a nearby house, the Romanesque House illustrates the medieval way of life in Hyères, where the houses combined residential and defensive functions. Its segmentary arched bays, now walled or modified, suggest adaptations over the centuries. The lack of accurate archival documents makes its history partial, but its architecture offers a rare example of a Romanesque civil house in an area marked by Italian and Comtal influences.
