Origin and history

The house in Poillé-sur-Vègre, in the Sarthe department ( Pays de la Loire region), is a building dating from the 1st quarter of the 16th century. It is recognized as a Historic Monument, although architectural details or its sponsor are not specified in available sources. Its most remarkable element is a bas-relief adorning a chimney, dated 1511, which was protected by ministerial decree in 1928.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the region of Pays de la Loire, then integrated into the Duchy of Anjou and the County of Maine, experienced a period of relative prosperity linked to agriculture, river trade and handicrafts. The bourgeois or urban houses of this time often reflect the enrichment of the local elites, with sculpted decorations such as this bas-relief, showing an emerging Renaissance influence. These buildings served both as housing and as a symbol of social status for their owners, often merchants, notables or local officers.
