Origin and history
The Sauron House is a historic house located in Montusclat, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the late 16th century, it belonged to a royal notary and is distinguished by its architectural quality, mixing local rural features and sophisticated urban elements. A semi-outbuilding tower houses a spiral staircase, while the interior features French ceilings and monumental chimneys.
This house illustrates the high social status of its owner, royal notary, in an area where traditional habitat was generally more modest. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments by order of 12 February 2002 underlines its heritage importance, in particular for its interior decorations (woodworks, chimneys) and its well preserved structure.
The protection of the Sauron house covers the entire building, including its decorative interior elements. Its architecture reflects a period of transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where rural elites adopted urban stylistic elements. The precise location, in the village of Montusclat (address: 5002 A Le Bourg), makes it a local testimony of the social and architectural history of the Haute-Loire.
