Origin and history
Sebastiani-Conneau House is a large house of notables built in stages between the 18th and 19th centuries in La Porta, Corsica. It reflects the architectural and social evolution of its time, with interior arrangements characteristic of the bourgeoisie under Napoleon III. The richness of its furniture and its decorations, such as well preserved murals or fucones, testify to a refined lifestyle.
In 1772, a room in the house was already serving as a court for La Porta, highlighting its central role in local life. In 1853, Henri Conneau, Napoleon III's personal doctor, added a reception floor to his wedding. The house, visible on the Napoleonic cadastre of 1876, also preserves a chestnut drier and a funeral chapel, the latter inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 2008.
The facades, roofs, central staircase and fucon were protected by arrest in 2011. These elements, combined with the organization of rooms around a monumental staircase, illustrate the gradual adaptation of the building to the needs of an affluent family, between judicial, domestic and representative functions.
The precise location of the house, Sotto Alla Chiesa in La Porta (Haute-Corse), and its state of conservation make it a remarkable example of the Corsican heritage linked to the social ascent of local elites under the Empire and the Third Republic.
