Origin and history

Tafanelli House is a monument located in the commune of Villefranche-de-Conflent, in the Occitanie region. This building, built in the 18th century, is distinguished by its gate in a circle segment, dated precisely from 1777. This portal, an iconic architectural element, was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 3 November 1965, thus highlighting its heritage value.

Villefranche-de-Conflent, one of the most beautiful villages in France, is a medieval fortified city whose urban planning has been marked by military and civil influences throughout the centuries. In the 18th century, when the Tafanelli house was built, the region was under the authority of the Kingdom of France and was relatively stable after the conflicts of the previous centuries. Bourgeois houses, like this one, often reflected the social status of their owners, with careful architectural details, such as open gates.

The gate of Tafanelli House, located on Rue Saint-Jean, is the only protected element of the monument. Its style, typical of 18th century civil architecture, illustrates the evolution of aesthetic tastes of the era, combining functionality and ornaments. The inscription in the title of the Historical Monuments concerns only this element, which suggests its particular importance in the local heritage.
