Origin and history

The house of Réalmont is a bourgeois house built in the 18th and 19th centuries, on the edge of the circular boulevard which replaced the old city walls. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of this period, marked by the rise of urban residences for the affluent classes. Its location reflects the urban evolution of Réalmont, where medieval fortifications have given way to more open spaces adapted to modern needs.

The most remarkable element of this house is a rare panoramic wallpaper, entitled Chinese Procession, made between 1811 and 1820. This wall decor, originally composed of 30 lees of which 28 are still in place, adorns a room on the ground floor. This type of wallpaper, very popular at the beginning of the nineteenth century, bears witness to cultural exchanges with Asia and to the taste for exoticism in the bourgeois interiors of the period. The house, whose facades and roofs have been protected since 2008, thus embodies both an architectural heritage and an exceptional decorative heritage.

Classified Historic Monument by order of 21 May 2008, the house sees its facades, roofs and the room housing the protected Chinese procession wallpaper. This inscription highlights the heritage value of the building, both for its architecture and for its interior decor, a rare example preserved of panoramic wallpaper from the early 19th century. The precise location, at or near 15 rue Badou (53 rue de la Bouriotte), however, remains approximate according to available sources.
