Origin and history

Terrey House, located in Motey-Besuche (Haute-Saône), is a modest building built in the 18th century, reflecting the Burgundy rural architecture of the period. With an irregular square plan, it consists of a partially vaulted ground floor, housing a cellar and a stable, while the upper floor features a two-room apartment, including a kitchen equipped with a stone fireplace. The inscriptions engraved on the arch of the door of the cellar and the foyère plate of the chimney mention Étienne Terrey, notary royal at Mosey-Besuche, as well as the vintages 1768 and 1769, attesting to its construction or major renovations at this time.

In the 19th century, the house was part of a larger complex, including another building body now gone, organizing a courtyard, a garden and a vineyard room. This complex illustrates the way of life of rural notables of the time, where domestic, agricultural and professional functions lived in the same space. The Terrey House, although small, thus bears witness to the social status of its owner, royal notary, in a town of Franche-Comté.

Classified as a Historic Monument in 2015, Terrey House is fully protected for its heritage and historical interest. Its inscription highlights the importance of vernacular buildings in understanding social hierarchies and local construction patterns under the Old Regime. The preserved architectural elements, such as the chimney or arches, provide a precise overview of the techniques and materials used by 18th-century artisans in this region.

The current address, 5 Traverse Street (or 1 B Traverse du Notaire Royal according to the sources), places the monument in the historical heart of the village. Although its GPS location is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), it clearly identifies its location in the urban fabric of Mosey-Besuche, near Vesoul. No information is available on its accessibility to the public or its contemporary use (visits, rentals, etc.).
