Origin and history

This 17th century house, located in Fréjus in the Var, is a remarkable example of the civil architecture of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Classified as a Historic Monument, it is distinguished by its vaulted cellar in the middle of the village, its marble fireplaces and its staircase adorned with a baluster ramp. Some decorative elements, such as carpentry, fireplaces and gypsum shops, were remodelled in the 18th century, reflecting the evolution of artistic tastes.

The building is particularly well known for having welcomed Napoleon Bonaparte on 27 April 1815, when he boarded the island of Elbe after his abdication. This ephemeral visit marks a key episode in the history of the First Empire and gives home a symbolic dimension. The 17th century monumental gate, listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments since 1926, bears witness to its heritage importance.

Located at 49 Sieyès Street, this house illustrates the mixture of 17th and 18th century architectural styles, while embodying a place of memory linked to the Napoleonic epic. Its state of conservation and its location make it a point of interest for lovers of history and Provencal heritage.
